History of
Press Club Burewala
College Road, Burewala, Punjab, Pakistan
The Press Club Burewala is regarded as one of the oldest and most respected journalistic organisations in the region, representing journalists associated with both print and electronic media. Since its establishment, the Press Club has played an important role in promoting responsible journalism, protecting journalists' rights, and strengthening freedom of expression in Burewala and surrounding areas.
Before 1987
Before the formal establishment of the Press Club in 1987, journalism in Burewala had already begun flourishing through the efforts of several senior and dedicated journalists who laid the foundation for organised media activities in the city.
Among the prominent early figures were Molvi Abdul Khalil, Sheikh Aziz Ahmad, Muhammad Idrees Janbaz, Molvi Abdul Jabbar Bhatti, and Mian Abdul Hafeez, along with many other journalists who contributed significantly to strengthening local journalism and creating public awareness.
Their dedication, commitment, and professional services paved the way for the establishment of a united journalistic platform in Burewala.
Press Club Burewala
The Press Club was formally established in 1987 in a rented building situated on College Road, Burewala. The first official governing body of the club was formed the same year under the leadership of Rao Munawar Ahmad Khan, who became the founding president of the organisation.
The oath-taking ceremony of the inaugural body was administered by Rai Muhammad Amin Khan, marking the beginning of an organised and united platform for journalists in the city.
Permanent Building
In 1996, the Press Club entered a new era of progress when its permanent building was established adjacent to the Burewala Public Library. The project was completed during the 1993–1996 government of the Pakistan Peoples Party through the special efforts of Chaudhry Qurban Ali Chohan, Chaudhry Mahmood Akhtar Ghuman, and Abdul Hameed Bhatti, who arranged and provided funds for the construction.
The foundation stone of the new Press Club building was laid by Muhammad Zakaria Qureshi and Rai Muhammad Amin Khan.
The construction of a permanent building marked a turning point in the club's history — transforming it from a rented space into an owned institutional home for the journalists of Burewala, symbolising permanence, legitimacy, and collective strength.
Their Contributions
The construction and establishment of the new building became possible through the collective efforts, dedication, and vision of a group of enthusiastic journalists and founding members who gave their time and energy to build a lasting institution for the profession.
Their combined vision and selfless service gave the Press Club its institutional identity, enabling it to grow into the respected organisation it remains today.
the Press Club
Since its establishment, Press Club Burewala has continued to serve as a symbol of journalistic unity, professional integrity, and freedom of expression. Over the decades, it has played a vital role in the development of journalism in the region and has remained a respected platform for journalists of both print and electronic media.
The Press Club stands as a testament to the enduring power of collective effort — a reminder that when journalists unite with purpose, they create institutions that outlast any individual and continue to serve their communities for generations.
A beacon of press freedom and professional integrity — serving Burewala's journalists for over three decades and counting.
